An extension to file is not an extension to pay tax.

Iowa grants an automatic 6-month extension with no application at all, as long as at least 90% of the total tax due is paid (through withholding, estimated payments, or other credits) by the original due date. There is no extension request to file - the Department simply treats a taxpayer who meets the 90% test as having one.
