An extension to file is not an extension to pay tax.

Form 4768, Application for Extension of Time to File a Return and/or Pay U.S. Estate (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Taxes, does two separate things: it requests an automatic six-month extension to file Form 706, 706-A, 706-NA, or 706-QDT, and separately, it can request an extension of time to pay estate or generation-skipping transfer tax under IRC §6161.

Filing extension vs. payment extension

Extension typeAutomatic?Length
Extension to file (Form 706 series)Yes, automatic6 months
Extension to pay estate/GST tax (IRC §6161)No - requires reasonable cause shown to the IRSDiscretionary; IRC §6161 permits up to 12 months per request, with longer periods available under IRC §6166 for closely held business interests

The filing extension is automatic on timely, properly completed submission. The payment extension is not automatic - the executor must demonstrate reasonable cause, and the IRS has discretion to grant, deny, or condition it.

A separate and more generous payment deferral exists under IRC §6166 for estate tax attributable to an interest in a closely held business, which can extend payment for up to 14 years under specific conditions. This is a distinct provision from the general IRC §6161 extension and is not requested on Form 4768 alone.
Authority: IRC §6081(a) (filing extension); IRC §6161 (payment extension, reasonable cause); IRC §6166 (closely held business deferral, referenced for context, not requested via Form 4768). Source: irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-4768.
