An extension to file is not an extension to pay tax.

Electronic filing is the fastest way to get a confirmed extension on record. The IRS offers two no-cost or low-cost paths before any commercial service is needed.

IRS Free File

IRS Free File lets any individual taxpayer, regardless of income, e-file Form 4868 electronically at no charge. This is a direct IRS program, not a third-party product, and produces an IRS-confirmed extension.

Pay electronically and designate the payment as an extension

Individuals who make an electronic payment through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or a debit/credit/digital wallet payment and select that the payment is for an extension are automatically treated as having filed Form 4868 - no separate submission is required. A confirmation number is issued and should be retained as proof.

IRS Modernized e-File (MeF)

Businesses and other entities generally e-file Form 7004, Form 8868, and other extension forms through the IRS Modernized e-File system, accessed through IRS-authorized tax software or an authorized e-file provider - not filed directly by the taxpayer through an IRS web portal the way Form 4868 can be through Free File.

Commercial extension services

Commercial services, including tax software providers and dedicated extension-filing sites such as TaxExtension.com and FileLater.com, offer paid e-filing of extension forms, often bundled with confirmation tracking and reminders. This guide does not endorse any specific commercial service; see the resources page for a neutral list of official and third-party options so filers can compare. Before using any third-party service, confirm it is currently operating, uses IRS-authorized e-file transmission, and discloses its fees clearly.

Every third-party link on this site is checked for a working, live connection before publication, and this guide carries no affiliate or referral relationship with any listed provider.
